Based af. Beau is Afraid is one of my favorite movies ever! Saw it in theaters. I’ll never forget leaving the theater and everyone was saying “what the fuck did we just watch”
I think as long as you have something new to say about a classic, no problem with an adaptation! But I did feel that Frankenstein didn't really have any new ideas and was visually also quite mid (at least the Nosferatu remake looked stunning). To me it felt like a very cliché 21st century horror remake without any genuine new ideas or things to say :( like I feel like in 2025 there are SO many things to be said about the dangers of just powering ahead with technology, and with scientists thinking that if you can do something that implies that you should do it. I just didn't feel like Del Toro really got to say those things :(
Maybe I'm the outlier here but I actively avoid remakes and prequels of beaten dead horses and choose the other movie every time. Frankenstein was good but it wasn't the best movie of 2025 (to me). But then again, I won't listen to Eminem's new stuff either.
Ha! I didn’t even know there was a remake, having ceased paying attention to blockbusters for decades.
The last popular mass market movie I saw in the theater was the late 1990’s “Enemy of the State” where Gene Hackman deservedly stole every scene he was in. The last time a kernel of truth was allowed on the big screen.
As for AI’s so called creativity I think of its being given the brain of Abby Someone with less than amusing outcomes! And that in the end AI is (woof) going to give it to us.
I studied history for decades...The whole ancient/medieval world was always considering change and deviation from old classics as decay. Roman and Greek writers constantly bemoaned not living in a golden age. Even during a new golden age. Innovative Creativity occurred despite the cultural belief system.
"Derivative" WAS what most cultures historically aspired to. Imitation as close as possible to the classic was the aim. This is a pattern we see repeated endlessly in Western and Eastern civilizations.
I don't agree, im a product of my era, I want to see more originality. However, its certainly not the norm in humanity's culture, to have Endless creative brilliance that isn't at all an imitation or derivative of older works.
I saw Beau is Afraid and tell everyone who will listen to watch. Will never watch the lilo and stitch remake. Built different

One of the few movies I've gone to see twice in the first run. Art. It's just art.

Good for you! I should probably drop my NPC ways and do that too. And yeah, Recovery was his last album in my book lol
