I want to give this 100 likes, because it’s the real deal. Companies that don’t solve problems or make the world better are only in it for extraction and profit. Workers are dispensable to them. Hell, customers are dispensable to them.
There are places in the universe where intelligence, collaboration, and problem solving come together and everyone benefits. Those are the groups I seek to work with; and say fuck all to the asshats.
It is so terrible behind the scenes. There are things that I am legally not allowed to disclose, but whatever it is that you imagine happens at these tech companies, it is much, much worse.
Yes, it’s bad… I was inside media tech and software companies for a long time. The last one fired people before bonuses were awarded and for many it was 10-20% compensation. One place I worked had “unlimited pto” that I couldn’t take unless the boss thought it was a good enough reason to allow it.
From 1996-1998 I worked for the US Census Bureau. Two other people started the same day as me. A guy a little older than me and an older guy who had worked other government jobs in the past. After about a year or so of working there, they let the older guy go, and they immediately changed the security code on all the doors so he couldn’t get back into the building. Turned out he was one day away from being able to retire and collect his government pension.
Now, I don’t really know how his performance was. I got the feeling it was good enough. But even if it was crap, if all you wanted was for him to be gone, if you knew he was going to retire the next day, couldn’t you just wait for him to leave? Did you really have to screw him out of his pension?
“Years of effort—and a life-changing amount of money for a peasant like me—down the drain.
I worked nights.
I worked weekends.
I worked through part of my goddamn parental leave so the team could hit an important deadline.”
I moved from tech to working for a nonprofit. I figured if I was going to be sinking my life energy into something, it should be to do something to make the world a better place.
I still give way too much of myself, but at least I’m not under the illusion that there will be some big financial gain in return…
Dude....right there with ya'....it's why I stayed in construction....performance or lack thereof....is OBVIOUS.....you did the work or you didn't......I stayed with very small employers most of life.....happily avoiding all you described...Be Blessed!
There is a podcast about this - I listened to it years ago. In my working experience…yes, total proof it’s all bs. If I can find the podcast I’ll link it to you
There isn’t a company on earth that wouldn’t fire anyone if it meant preserving profits, equity, or market share. There is no loyalty from them, so no loyalty is due them.
I have mixed feeling about this one. I am no lover of capitalism and the way it exploits people in the ways you describe so well. Equally the tech bro may have done home-working a huge disservice. Presumably the jobs he did were all home-based, which will lead employers to distrust home-working even more. They can monitor people in the office much more easily. It may lead to more companies insisting employees attend the office every day which is not what many people want.
That’s a super valid concern—and I’m probably not helping the situation by writing shit like this. However, someone’s gunna do it. May as well be us while we still have the chance 🤷♂️

Damn, same experience on the “unlimited PTO.” What a sham.
"If the work is real, 10 jobs is impossible. Period.
But if the jobs are bullshit—and you can juggle 10 of them without anyone noticing?
Well, that’s not scamming, that’s proof."
Yup.

Straight up evil. I worry derive some sick pleasure in doing it to us.

“You wanted to get rich.
And you wanted someone else to pay the price.” If that doesn’t define late-stage capitalism.. Standing ovation! 👏 👏 👏

YEP! Corporate greed is real and evil. I saw it literally kill people in the "healthcare" industry. Restacking. 🙏🏽☮️💕
It’s time to call it out for what it is! ✊🏻
And thank you jeanne 💖

owning, leading many companies is admired
while working at multiple is shunned
Hard yes to all of the above.
